“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

-Deuteronomy 6:4-9

From the beginning of the Bible, God’s people have been commanded not only to take the Lord’s Word to heart – but to plant it and water it in their children’s hearts as well. And as a reformed Christian, homeschool mom, and teacher, my desire is to help other parents, artists, and teachers encourage and lead their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord.

Why the Berean Bookshelf?

The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

-Acts 17:10-11

Like the Jews in Berea did, we are commanded to test all things by the authority of Scripture to see if they are true. And not only that, we’re to teach our children to do the same. Being discerning in this world of subjectivity and emotions is necessary if we and our children are to walk in a way that pleases the Lord.

… but test everything; hold fast what is good.

-1 Thessalonians 5:21

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect

-Romans 12:2

Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.

-Ephesians 5:9-10

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment…

Philippians 1:9

But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

-Hebrews 5:14

What kind of books will you find on this “shelf?”

Mostly devotions, books, and even fiction created and chosen to help in raising covenant children, but also a writer’s perspective on the world and art through a reformed Christian lens. Some will be my books, but I will also recommend the books of other authors that my family trusts and enjoys in our household. Some of the links might be affiliate links, but nothing will be recommended unless I absolutely love that particular piece of work.

About Brittany…

Brittany is a sinner saved by the almighty and sovereign God of the Bible. She is also an active duty military wife, homeschool mom, and reformed Christian, and she confesses the teachings of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). She has a bachelor’s of science in elementary education, but she’s a rebel when it comes to teaching styles, refusing to be nailed down to any one method, her motto being, “Do what works.” Her coffee generally tastes like caffeine-flavored creamer, she’s terrible at tennis, and she dreams of her one-day forever house having a rolling ladder in the library.
